1) calamity
- a great misfortune or disaster
~ Jeanette has survived two calamities in her lifetime, more than what people her age can ever endure.

2) listened intently
- to listen carefully
~ Mr. Tan called the class to attention and instructed them to listen intently to the instructions.

3) weary
- tired, listless
~ He gave a long, weary sigh after school ended.

4) humanitarian
- someone who seeks to promote human welfare / a philanthropist
~ Ali is an active humanitarian. He took a long leave from work to help out with the children in Cambodia.

5) deceit
- the action of deceiving someone.
~She is full of deceit. No one trusts what she says.

6) swift
- fast, happening quickly
~The pickpocket happened swiftly. No one realised it.

7) rampant
-flourishing or spreading unchecked
~In Bangkok, pickpocket is rampant.

8) arsenal
- a factory or a store for weapons
~Learning five new words a day will increase my arsenal of words.
