Dear 6F’ians,

With the release of the secondary school posting today, we can say that your primary school journey has come to an end. Come tomorrow, you will be reporting to your designated secondary school.

Some of you may have gotten the school of your choice, some may not. Although some schools may be more ‘well known’ and play a part in your development, do remember that it is your efforts that will determine your results.

It is a brand new start for everyone as you embark on your Sec One education. Do learn from your experience in Unity and keep up with your revision. Do not wait till the last moment to study for a test and/or exam. Adopt a positive attitude in all you do. The first impression you give others will determine how others think of you and how they will interact with you. Make it count.

For those of you in the Express course, do not rest on your laurels but continue to strive onwards. Seek and grab opportunities to enrich yourself and broaden your horizons. The rest of you in the Normal course, this is not the end but the beginning of your journey to a better stream. It is possible to be promoted from N(T) to the N(A) course, and/or N(A) to the Express course. You need to be focus on your objectives and know that you have not failed until you have given up.

Lastly, Unity and I will always welcome you. UPS has been and will always be a place where you can seek shelter from any storm that threatens to engulf you. Should you need a listening ear, just drop me an email or a sms.

With that, I wish you all the best in your future endeavours. May the light in you shine forth, warming everyone in your path.

This are the updated news for today 5th july 2009
SINGAPORE: Singapore has confirmed 52 new cases of H1N1 flu, bringing the total to 1,055 so far. Investigations are ongoing for these 52 cases. Of the 69 cases investigated on Sunday, 50 were local cases while 19 were imported ones. Of the cumulative number of 1,003 cases investigated thus far, 591 were local cases and 412 were imported ones. The Health Ministry says that the current strain remains mild, except for high-risk individuals with underlying medical conditions where complications and even deaths may occur. The ministry urges members of the public who feel unwell with flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose) to promptly seek medical attention. If the symptoms are mild, their usual GPs, the nearest Pandemic Preparedness Clinic or polyclinics, would be able to assess them.

Dear David,

How are you? I hope you are enjoying the year-end holidays!

As for me, I will be going to Malacca from 3 December to 9 December and will be back in Singapore for the rest of the month. This trip to Malacca will be an entirely new experience and I really wish to fully engage myself in the activities planned. This vacation will be an excellent chance for me to relax and escape from the stress of school.

I will be travelling to Malacca by train and I am very excited as this will be the first time I am taking a train! I am looking forward to this trip as various activities have been planned for me. My friends who have been to the famous Water World Park were full of praises for the amazing displays, and I absolutely cannot wait to explore the park! Also, I look forward to taking a river cruise around the Straits of Malacca with my uncle, aunt and cousins! My friends have told me that the scenery around the Straits of Malacca is astoundingly beautiful. On 9 December, I will be returning home.

For the remaining three Saturdays of December, I have made arrangements to play computer games at my best friend’s house. I have also agreed to help my mother clean the storeroom as it is very disorganised. During my free time, I plan to arrange my collection of phone cards and sort them into an album. My best friend Tom is going to host the Christmas Party for this year, and I have agreed to help out with the decorations. New Year’s Eve will probably be a quiet dinner with my family.

Well, that summarises some of the activities planned for my December holidays. What about your plans for the holidays? Will your family be going on a vacation overseas? If so, I want to hear all about it! I look forward to receiving your reply!

After a hectic week of many unforseened incidents, it is finally the weekend! However, let's take time to reflect on the lesson we had on Peer Pressure. Sad to say but we do have negative peer pressure mounting on us at times. One way to reduce them is to be a source of positive peer pressure yourself, and to surround yourself with true friends. True friends are those who will lead you on the right path and will not hesitate to rebuke you when you are heading in the wrong way.

Difficult situations can be made easier with friends who will stand by you. With that, this is what I would like to share with you this week.

I was tutoring a class on composition writing and I decided to share it with you.

How can we make our composition more interesting? GRAB the reader's attention right from the start!

Ensure that ;

1) The main characters are introduced and
2) Make them 'ALIVE'
3) The Setting of the story is introduced
4) Keep the reader in suspense and have them switch the TV off, ignore the coffee and drop everything else so that they will read your next paragraph.

I'll explain more in class. :)

Ryan, being himself, turned a deaf ear and knelt on all fours, placing his lips inches away from the mushroom. I shuddered.

Fear gripped me as I saw Ryan's face turned purple.

1) Characters are 'ALIVE'
I used speech to introduced the characters. From the conversation, the reader would imagine that Ryan is a mischievous boy while his best friend, Farhan, is a careful and responsible boy (LIKE ME!! hahaha)

2) Where can you find poisonous mushrooms? Not in Cold Storage or even Sheng Siong Supermarket right? How about the school Science Garden? I doubt so.
Hence, with that, the reader will realise that the story is set (THE SETTING) at a field, camping trip or even the mountains.

3) I shuddered. -> Short sentences.
Pair up long and short sentences. It will make your story an easier and interesting read. Not all sentences must be long. Short sentences will make your writing more 'colourful'.

4) Suspense -> Fear gripped me as I saw Ryan's face turned purple.
With this line, I was able to grab the readers attention and hopefully make him/her switch the tv off and lock himself/herself in the room and read my story. :)

OH NO!! Calamity CALAmity CALAMITY!!!!

Ok kiddos.. :(

Calamity has struck me. Firstly, I changed the blog skin on Friday and was left 'blurred' when I realised that I messed up Christine's and Mathilda's original work on the blog. Sigh..

Then, I left school on Friday hurriedly as I was late for my prayers (Friday mass prayers for Muslims). I was confident that I have packed everything!

I had a school assignment (my degree programme) due on midnight 24 January 2009 so have been sitting in front of the Mac and typing away since my dinner.

Then, at this very moment, at 1237 AM, Saturday, while all of you are sleeping soundly (I HOPE!), I realised that I did not bring the materials home!!!! So I am unable to furnish you with

1) the answers to the synthesis

2) the vocabulary building exercise

3) the oral passage that I've promised. boo hoo... :(

Please forgive this 'old' man for being so forgetful. I hope to do better and not fall into the depths of amnesia in the near future.

Without hesitation, I dialed for the police.

By now, a large fire had materialised.

The police interrogated the housebreakers.

She cried uncontrollably when the fireman explained that her flat was on fire.

When she was awaken by the choking air, she realised that her kitchen was in flames.

I summoned my courage and went after the housebreakers.

Smoke was seen seeping out through the gaps.

I saw the two men behaving suspiciously.

The pungent odour hit me like a bullet. "Oh my god!" I exclaimed the moment I regained my senses.

‘Destined for Greatness’

You must be wondering why I am titling the very first post by me as ‘Destined for Greatness’. Who is destined for greatness? You! I would like each and every one of you to know that your existence is not by chance; that is, you are meant to be here. You have defied great odds and you are a survivor, and that the future is yours to mould.

My next few paragraphs will explain what I mean. You can choose to ignore it but you will not deny the truth in it. It is all up to you to decide your next course of action after reading it.

Your existence is not by chance. We all have learnt about human reproduction so let’s not go ‘eee’ or ‘ahh’ about what I am going to talk about. How did you come into this world? I believe you remember that you need the sperm and egg from your parents to create you.

The first miracle – To create the unique you, your parents have to find each other among the 5.8 billion (in 1996) people in the world, get married and decide to have children. When you learn about probability, you will realised that the chances of them finding one other is very small, and then to decide that they are right for each other and then to have children is about 1 in 23.2 billion (23200000000) based on my estimation and calculation. I might be off but I reckon that it would be in the tens of billions. Nevertheless, you have defied greats odd.

The second miracle – You know that when the nucleus of the sperm fuses with the nucleus of the egg, fertilisation occurs. From then the cells will divide to form you. But do you know that at any one time, an average of 300 million sperms are looking for the egg. Imagine you are one of the 300 million sperms, finding your way and looking for the egg. Going through a journey unknown to you and trying to reach the egg before the other sperms do. And when you do reach the egg, there might be other sperms surrounding the egg. By the secrets of nature, the egg allows you to enter and to fuse with her. Doesn’t this make you a winner and very lucky to be selected? The other 299999999 sperms would ‘die’ and never to be thought off again.

The third miracle – You are meant to be here. Referring to the previous miracle, any slight difference in the condition, for example, the location of the egg might just be 0.0001 cm from the original location. When that happens, other sibling of yours might have taken your place in class or in this world. You would not have been ‘here’ or thought off. In addition, for your mother to carry you to full term despite the dangers that are lurking as she moves around, for her to deliver you with much complications, for your parents to nurse you and help you grow, for them to enroll you in this school. All this shows that you are meant to be here; to be surrounded by this group of friends or classmates whom themselves are miracles too.

In conclusion, what I would like you to know is that you are a miracle and is wonderfully created; a unique person who has defied great odds and is a winner and survival. However, are you continuing this ‘winning tradition’? Are you making this opportunity that you have to create a better future for yourselves? If you have said yes to both the above questions, well done, keep up the good work. However, if your answer is a no, then it is not too late to start now.

Start by taking responsibility of yourself. Take pride in your work which is an extension of you. A good piece of assignment tells a lot of its owner. The same goes for a slip-shod piece. This is one of the many life skills you will learn but whether to put it into practice is entirely up to you. Next, use the weekend to ponder over what you have just read. When you have come to your sense, remind yourself what you want to be. Then thank your parents for giving you the opportunity to achieve it. Every parent has high hopes for their children and are always sacrificing in order to give them the best. Your parents are no different. Try not to disappoint them and yourself.

Lastly, when you start to be what you are supposed to be – a miracle, winner, survivor, others will say that you ARE destined for greatness and not WERE destined for greatness.

Hey people!

I just completed marking your homework. Wooo there's loads of work to be done! :) Work hard and read more please. Please use the materials that I distributed (eg : the newspaper articles) to good use. Err, not for lavatory use ok? Ok I'll make it clearer. Don't use them as toilet paper! :P

Read well, and everything else follows.

Here are the words we discussed in class.

1) empathy (noun)
- the ability to understand and share the feelings of others
~ Almost everyone likes the class monitor. He has empathy towards the less fortunate.

2) priority (noun)

- a thing that is regarded more important than the other
~ Jaline is always scolded by her mother as housework is not high on her list of priorities.

3) speculation (verb)
- predict an event without any facts
~ David hates his classmates as they frequently speculate about his private life.

4) informal (adjective)
- having a relaxed, friendly or unofficial style and manner

~ It is nice to see the teachers behaving informally amongst themselves. It shows that they are 'normal' after all.

5) marketing (verb)
- advertise or promote something

~ The salesgirl went all out marketing the new product to the aunties.

6) amid (preposition)

- in the middle of

~ Heidi lives in a beautiful cottage, set amid magnificent lush green fields of sunflower.

7) materialistic (adjective)
- a tendency to consider material possessions more valuable than spiritual values

~ Henry does not get along well with her materialistic aunt.

8) pathologist (nouns)

- a person who works in the field of pathology (the science of the cause and effects of death)

~ Karim dreams to be a famous pathologist.
